How to Set and Reach Your Goals

Are you ready to see ‘goal setting’ in a completely new way? A way that will 100% create success for you and that genuine feeling of achievement and progress.

There are some vital things you need to know about goal setting, before we really dig deeper into creating and making them happen for you.

  1. A goal should not be something you can never achieve in your current situation e.g. ‘I want to own a mansion in the middle of nowhere and be able to quit my job’.

Ask yourself

  • Is this realistic for me right now?

  • How many times have I set this goal and never achieved it?

  • Can I make this happen in my current situation?

  1. These goals need to be real and true to you

Don’t set your goals on what you think you should be achieving, or how you think others would regard you as successful. Make sure your goals are personal to you and hold real meaning to you and your life.

  1. Goal setting is a journey and something that progresses over time

Why do so many of us set goals?

If you use goals in the right way, they will make you feel empowered for what you can achieve, motivated in how to get there, determined because you are now aware of just how much progress you could make with the goals you have set.

Goal setting is a way of growing, uplifting and developing yourself - not pressuring and tormenting yourself to get something done or tick a box, and feel deflated when you haven’t it.

2018 is all about YOU. YOUR goals and aspirations.

And….. actually achieving them!

Before we go any further, I want you to think about the goals you would normally have set yourself at the start of a new year;

  • Did they hold genuine personal meaning for you?

  • Were you able to visualise your end goal every day since setting this goal?

  • How did this goal make you feel? Excited? Dread? Pressure?

Think about these questions as we start to dig deeper into goal setting and these goals can have a positive and real impact on your life.

How can you create a new habit? Something that will stick? Something that will lead you to achieving your goal?

I am going to share 5 realistic and related tips to help you maintain these new habits and allow you to reach your goals in 2018;

  1. Get yourself an accountability buddy

Having someone to share this journey with, not only makes it more fun but also helps to keep you driven towards achieving it.

  1. Set mini goals each month to help you reach your 90-day target

What can you do this month that will edge you closer to your end goal?

By creating mini goals along the way, that will support you reaching your end goal, you are allowing flexibility and the awareness that life may get in the way on occasion.

Don’t use the set back as the reason to ‘right off’ that week or month, let your mini goal fuel you and allow you to still achieve what you set out to achieve.

  1. Celebrate!!

We all love praise, recognition and acknowledgement for doing something good – so reward yourself this way.

CELEBRATE -trust me, whatever your end goal is, celebrating these mini goals are vital to getting there.

We all enjoy praise and recognition in different ways, so make sure your ‘treat’ is relevant for you and will make you feel good your progress so far.

You will start to associate your hard work and commitment to praise and success and this will drive you to continue doing so. Remember – maintaining that initial drive is the hard part.

Having small rewards for yourself will heighten that drive factor and motivate you to continue doing what you are doing. Every small goal you reach will ultimately lead you to achieving your big goal.

  1. Be honest with yourself

When you start something new and create a new goal, this will come with its own challenges. You are only human, we must always embrace that.

Nobody is perfect, we will struggle along the way, it will be harder on some days than others BUT ask yourself WHY.

WHY did you set this goal? WHY do you want to achieve it? WHY now? WHY will it make a difference to my life moving forward?

Use these answers to lift you up from the hard days and struggles and let these be your true motivation. The more personal the goal, the bigger the benefit it can have on your life, the more emotion you feel when you visualise achieving that goal – the more determined and focussed you will become in achieving it.

  1. Visualise

When you have achieved and reached your goal;

  • How will you feel?

  • What will you look like?

  • What emotions will show on your face?

  • What will your loved ones say?

  • How will it affect your daily life?

  • Where will you be?

  • How will you celebrate?

These images need to embed into your mind. Every day you must spend time focussing on these mental images.

Brushing your teeth in the morning, on your journey to work, during your lunch break, in the bath, before bed – as often as you can.

‘If you see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand.’

‘Your thoughts become your reality.’

Are your thoughts working in your favour right now?

Start to visualise the you, that you will be, say and feel when you achieve your goals. THIS is your biggest motivator yet!

YOU are in control

I want to be honest with you about why some people reach their goals and make success happen, and some of us feel disappointment and unsatisfied with our commitments. It is all in your own mind, your own thoughts, your own perceptions. You have the power to create magic in your mind and bring that into your life, but we so easily forget this.

As an anxiety and mindset coach, I have spent a lot of time working on these areas and opening up awareness to just how powerful your mind can be – positive or negative, whichever you decide to focus on.

‘What you focus on, you create.’

Your mind is a muscle, the more we use it at its best, the better it becomes.

When you use your mind for positive, engaging, empowering thoughts – the more your mind will want to work with you not against you. Your mind will support you, give you confidence, fuel you to create success.

If you fill your mind with excuses, negativity and doubt – this is what you will get in return.

Have you ever noticed that when your day starts well, it usually continues that way?

Or if you get stuck in traffic, are late to a meeting, forget something at home, your day seems to continue to bring you back luck? ‘Today was not my day.’ ‘I need to go to bed and start again tomorrow.’

The way you think and perceive a situation, is what your brain will continue to give you in return.

Focus on how you want to feel, how you want your day to pan out, what positives you can notice.

Doing this with your mind will help you achieve your goals ten-fold and allow your mind and thoughts to work in your favour, boosting you up instead of bringing you down.
